Hi I hope someone could help me with this one. I am new to AVlinux. It keeps crashing (looks like it is iceweasel related) Sometimes the screen stays as it was but I can not move the mouse or do anything else, sometimes it just goes black but the computer stays on, sometimes the computer just switches off by itself  it is magic  |

OK,
Sounds like a possible video driver issue, what are the system specs, i.e what processor video card etc? I can't help you without more information.

Hi, That DELL has Intel graphics which should be well supported. You could try updating your current Kernel to this one and see if it's better: http://www.bandshed.net/kernels/2.6.36-3.dmz.2-default.zip Just download the zip to your home folder, right click and extract it and install both packages with Gdebi. |

I think more information is needed on these "crashes". It sounds like you are using the web browser at some flash web page and the screen locks up. If so, this is not a "crash" like a kernel panic, but is a video lock-up. Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a console (where you could potentially log in as root and kill X to restart video, but this is hard if you are not familiar with the command line). Anyway, you need to carefully document what causes the "crash" - is it reproducible? You could also look at the system log files in /var/log (again rather cryptic if you are not an expert).

OK,
I agree with varpa that saying the 'system crashes' is a bit misleading if what you really mean is that the web browser is misbehaving, the web browser is a single app not really the system. There have been rare problems with 2.6.36 Liquorix kernels and the flash player, they are difficult to troubleshoot because they are rare and only seem to affect certain hardware. That said the browser and flash problem usually doesn't take out the display completely only the sound. My guess is that the Xorg Intel driver doesn't get along with your laptop's Video chip, if that is the case then it is not an easy fix especially in Debian Stable and it is not a direct AV Linux issue it is a Debian Xorg issue. Let me look into it further when I get some time.

Hi and thanks a lot for the help! I am sorry if I offended someone, I do not mean to. I am pretty much a n00b to Linux and not so very familiar with the teminology. I am learning however since I fell in love with the concept. I get autorestarts out of the blue and iceweasel shuts of automaticly... Don't worry nobody is offended, I was really just trying to explain that a general description of a detailed specific problem makes it difficult to figure out, I didn't mean to sound offended or angry. The more detail you can give about how the problem occurs and what exactly you are running on the computer when it happens is better to help you. Does it only happen when you use iceweasel? or other programs as well. Stuff like that, the more details the better.

well, I have some more info. I hope it helps. -one thing that happened was that I had iceweasel open with about 8 tabs and in the "active"tab the was a .mp3 playing. When I closed the tab, iceweasel went down. I reopened it(restore session) and every time I closed that tab (4times) iceweasel crashed. After the 4th time avl rebooted spontaniously. -another thing: I was serving with iceweasel when it suddenly went down. I tried to restart but I got a black screen saying: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 899d64d5 ... ... 2.6.36-liquorix-2.6.36-3.dmz.2-avlinux-default #1 ... ... Kernel panic not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task ... ... panic occurred, switching back to text console (it did not switch back and Ctrl-Alt-F1 did not bring anything) Would it make sence to updat te kernel to 38? http://www.ilovemyjournal.com/?action=view_entry&eid=4856(I am still trying to get my Echo Audiofire12 working) |

Hi,
Thanks for the more detailed information. If it is only happening with iceweasel than the easiest thing to do is try a different browser, If you try another browser and are still having the same issue then it may be a kernel bug or even a video driver bug. When you originally gave me the make and model of your computer I looked up the specs and it listed Intel, perhaps nVidia was an option on some models. Updating to Kernel 2.6.38 is also an option. To do this you need to go to the Synaptic Package Manager (requires your Root Password) and first hit the 'Reload' button. Then in the search field in the top right hand corner type 'liquorix' and you should see some optional newer Liquorix kernels to install. Make sure you install both the image and headers packages.
You might want to try Opera or Google Chrome.
I don't know what to tell you about the Audiofire, I know they work but I don't have one myself to test and give you the details on the firmware etc.to get it working.
Try a new browser first and we'll have to work from there.

Hey thanks for the help! I realy appreciate it. I am pretty new to Linux and it requires quite a bite not to fall off. But I am realy eager to get this working. MS is no option and I do not like Apple. I checked here: http://www.bandshed.net/kernels that is why I thought there was no 38... Installing the Kernel I get this: The following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. linux-headers-2.6.38-2.dmz.1-liquorix-686: Depends: gcc-4.5 but it is not installable |

Hi,
If it reboots without you telling it to then yes it's a major problem.
On my test system I enabled the Sid repositories then selected 'gcc-4.5' in the Synaptic Search bar and it updated gcc-4.5 which would then allow me to install the latest liquorix 2.6.38.
Have you tried a different browser? You can also try an older Kernel from the kernel ftp like 2.6.31.12-rt21, you will need to manually set up a couple of options for firewire but you are not having success with the Audiofire currently anyway correct?

there is plugin dev and locales, there is also 4.6... Which one should I have? You just want to select gcc-4.5. It will pull gcc-4.5-base. You do not need gcc-4.5-plugin-dev or gcc-4.5-locales, nor do you need gcc-4.6. Just install gcc-4.5 and gcc-4.5-base (and a few other dependencies it may want to pull in.) |

What packages are listed as 'Pinned' in Synaptic? I don't remember having troubles installing gcc-4.5 but I may have unpinned some packages earlier for other reasons. Currently, if I click on 'Pinned' in Synaptic it lists seven packages:
gdm
grub-common
grub-legacy
initramfs-tools
live-initramfs
remastersys
remastersys-lxde-control-panel
Are any more packages pinned on your system? libstdc++, perhaps?
