Hi, i'm having a strange problem with oneric ubuntu. Basically the question is: what, except ubuntu core, desktop enviroment and ubiquity is needed for installation using remastersys bakup?
I've taken ubuntu 11.10 mini.iso, installed it bare-bones, added lxde and software i needed. And as well changed the appearance to the way I like. Now when i use remastered backup iso in virtualbox for installation, while showing ubuntu installer is unable to connect to network, it gets stuck at network configuration. So what could be the problem here, I'm pretty sure i just need to install something else, but i'm lost right now. Help me, please =)

Ok, I figured it out: ubuntu 11.10 mini doesn't install network-manager package by default (although network worked fine without it). So after installing it and re-remastering installation started fine. The only small issue now is that installer has a lot of pink areas on it Where could I configure ubiquity(I believe it is) style or something. Aside of that everything works like a charm

It probably uses either the gtk theme settings or gnome settings.

1) The pink in Ubiquity means a gtk3 theme error. Changing theme could fix the problem. I designed a theme myself and have the same issue. If gtk expects a line in your theme and it is not there, you get the pink.
PS. If you find a fix, let me know so that I can modify my theme.
Thanks.

Fragadelic: I am happy to see that you got funding... I am trying to create a minimal LXDE distro based on ubuntu-mini-remix-11.10-i386.iso (not Lubuntu). I tried UCK and Customizer because you can edit the iso directly without installing. I ran into problems: I get a kerner panic error in VBox when I try to boot the Customizer iso, and the UCK iso hangs at the Ubuntu 11.10 .... splash screen. I am told to edit boot scripts so that it loads the lxde desktop but nobody can tell me how. I added to the remix: sudo apt-get install lxde --no-install-recommends https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/u-customizer/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17&p=66#p66https://bugs.launchpad.net/uck/+bug/885491Can anyone help with what boot files to edit and how? If not, do I still have to install the iso on my harddrive to use Remastersys? If so, what is the best way to install a minimal lxde system (any easy instructions)?

I haven't gotten funding. There were some offers but nothing panned out. I received a lot of emails of support from people and that is what brought me back. Funding would be really nice though.
Anyway, with your issue, if you can start a new thread about your specific issue I can help you out. I do a lot of my own custom things but I don't have to modify the casper scripts at all. There are other ways of doing things. Give me a complete package list of what you have and then explain everything you want to do and I'll get you going.

Pierre, sorry but this problem is not critical for me, because only some empty areas of window are in pink(I can see everything I need), so I most likely won't help you here But I found one more thingy which doesn't suit me at all: my installer(ubiquity) is somehow critically dependant on network, so when I have no cable plugged-in, ubiquity crashes at the beggining, saying that it found a fatal error. And about that graphics thingy: I'm using lxde (not gnome) and lxdm (not gdm) if it has any importance Thank you fragadelic for your work, remastersys is one of my favorite things in linux

sorry, my mistake. It just is installer problem, when it loads, it crashes with no tips why (when you should choose a language), and after clicking ok to that message i get to live cd. ehh, what could be wrong. I had previous version on usb with same usb creator program and just installed few small things which it missed and made backup again. might it be the problem of machiene i'm running or i messed something?

Fragedelic & Foxy: Thanks for the offer to help, Fragadelic. I am glad to accept it. Not sure if we need right now a new thread or not, but suggest a title or start one and let me know where it is. Basically, what I want to do is create minimal Ubuntu install with a LXDE DE just like you did, Foxy. Then I would customize it and create an iso for distribution. I have been partly able to install a minimal Ubuntu/LXDE system using the Ubuntu mini.iso. Here is what I installed: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xinit lxde-core lxterminal lxdm Problem: GKSU does not appear to work. It keeps asking to reenter my password. In PCManFM, for example, I cannot use the option Menu>Tools>Open Current Folder as Root because of that. A second problem is that PCManFM does not let me mount other partitions. It displays them, but I get an Authentication Required error if I click to try to mount them. Foxy, do you have those problems with your LXDE installation? I develop for Quelitu (a lightweight Linux OS based on Lubuntu) and we would like for the next version to be based directly on LXDE. I will get to the booting/login problem next.

Well, first of all, I never have those problems because I use root account all the time (you can hate me now ). But when I install lxde i just call sudo apt-get install lxde. This meta-package includes all needed and you end up with system on which you just install the software you need and that's it. Maybe you are just missing some packages and this causes problems? When i first did install mini+lxde I was using usual account and I don't remember any problems with passwords or anything like that. Hope this helps, good luck with your distribution =)

lol - On my personal home remasters this is what I put in /etc/rc.local: testsudoers=`grep "^%admin ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL" /etc/sudoers`
if [ ! -d /casper ] && [ "$testsudoers" = "" ]; then cat >> /etc/sudoers <<FOO
%admin ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
FOO
fi
That makes sudo on the install work like it did in live where you don't need a password. This also means that gksu never asks for a password.

I do not like the idea of running as root but I think I found the answers:
Mounting other partitions in PCManFM: You have to edit this /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy and under Mount a system-internal device, change <allow_active>auth_admin_keep</allow_active> to <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
GKSU: In a terminal run: gksu-properties and select sudo It changes a setting in ~/.gconf/apps/gksu/$gconf.xml to true.
Ubuntu seems to be using sudo while LXDE defaults to su.
I am still working on the boot problem... will get back to you guys later.
Thanks.

fragadelic, I know this is the easiest and dumbest solution (to run as root), but i've had no problems exept of not being able to run VLC I'm really new to linux so it's kinda too complicated for me, what you use And problems kind of follow me all the time, so here's a new one: my remastered iso works fine on 2 pcs and on virtualbox, but on HP 530 the installer crashes in the beginning and i really don't know why... Live system boots with no problems though. Right now on that notebook Ubuntu 11.04 is installed and it somehow doesn't recognize USBs (fdisk -l doesn't show it). will appreciate any help

I have had problems installing on some machines and not on others. Remastered backups (with personal files) can be problematic.
Normally, you should be able to run as regular user. I have had problems because trying to create a minimal LXDE from scratch. You could install lubuntu-desktop with the mini iso and you would get a Lubuntu system with all problems fixed already (normally).

I'm posting this from my own remaster using lxde. I never installed lubuntu-desktop either.
I'm not sure why usb isn't working. What kernel are you using?

Well it came out that the machine itself was a problem (I guess). It's kind of old and has hardware problems from time to time, but one of latest versions of my system (which was obviously re-added to USB) installed fine with almost everything working, except of WiFi (surprise! ). The kernel is the one from Ubuntu 11.10 (the latest they put on their systems). Anyways thank you for your patiance and help, will be waiting for stable new version of remastersys .
