Hi,

I come from the Ubuntu forums that told me to look for help here.
I installed Ubuntu10.10 on Monday, did my updates, etc. then I wanted to make a backup for just in case I mess up the system in the learning process.

I downloaded the 2.0 version of Remastersys, installed it, used it, burned the result to dvd(1.8Gb big). When I tried to to use on a diff pc, it didnt want to work, told me that initdr.something or something like that is missing...

Then I was told to use the 3.0 version, so I downloaded it and tried everything from scratch again. This time the disc booted butsomething was wrong or missing, cant remember what it was...

Then I upgraded to Ubuntu11.04 and tried it again, same failures came up.
Im a Xp user, but want to switch to ubuntu and start learning the system. Ive been trying to create a backup for the last 4days now with no success. I dont want to do anything else before I have a backup of my system, not even load my music or anything..

In the Ubuntu forum, a person told me while in the backup process, if there is any errors or failures then it wouldnt work....

I do recall in all of my attempts that there was errors and failures to create the backup...
Here is the log...

Cannot stat source directory "/home/remastersys/remastersys/dummysys/" because No such file or directory
Cannot stat dir/file //home/will/.gvfs because Permission denied, ignoring
File //home/will/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log changed size while reading filesystem, attempting to re-read

Failed to read file //home/will/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home-23d0a916.log, creating empty file
llistxattr for //home/will/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home-23d0a916.log failed in read_attrs, because No such file or directory

There was others that I dont see on this log if I remember correctly...

Can anyone please help me

Thanx!

Upgrading from version to version may be the cause.  The errors you are seeing shouldn't cause the issues you are reporting.

Upgrading to newer versions doesn't always work cleanly and the system may be in a state of mixed applications/libraries.  Can you post the remastersys.log from the 3.0 version and also your /etc/apt/sources.list and any contents of files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

Most of the issues I have seen have been due to upgraded systems.  Something is different when you upgrade compared to installing clean with the exact versions live cd.

I'm willing to try and help you out but you have to be patient and work with me when I have time.  I see all posts that arrive on my forum here and answer them as soon as I can.

I think your upgrade went horribly wrong.

Where is the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files?  Those are needed for login.

Having nothing in /etc/apt/sources.list means you will not be able to install any updates or other packages.  Again, I believe this is from your failed upgrade.

On 11.04, you should have this in /etc/apt/sources.list as a minimum:

Code:
# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.04 _natty Narwhal_ - Release i386 (20110427.1)]/ natty main restricted

Also, your backup is too large and can't be made into an ISO file but this may be due to gvfs so you should add /home/will/.gvfs to the excludes but you need to get /etc/passwd and /etc/group back.  If you cannot get them back, then the only thing I can recommend is to boot the pc with a live cd and copy your /home/will stuff to an external drive and reinstall ubuntu from the beginning.

I've never seen /etc/passwd and /etc/group get deleted so I'm windering if maybe you did something you shouldn't have by accident?  Either that or the upgrade failed miserably.

Looking at this again it looks like something happened with the remastersys temp folder and is preventing it from working.  I added some more checks on what will be the final 3.0.0 version but I haven't uploaded it yet.

Please run "sudo remastersys clean" on the system and try backing up again.  Then if you still have problems please post the remastersys.log from that run.  The current backup you have is no good.

I would still add /home/will/.gvfs to the excludes though.  I'll have that part fixed in the final 3.0.0 version.

Please run "sudo remastersys clean" on the system and try backing up again.  Then if you still have problems please post the remastersys.log from that run.  The current backup you have is no good.

I am going to email you a new 3.0.0 that you can try out but you still have to clean the remastersys working folder.

In the gui on the Settings tab page.  There will be an empty are titled "Files to exclude"
Make sure you install the new version of remastersys before doing this though.

do you know why it does this? I tried it twice. I did include the exclude and did do " sudo remastersys clean"...

Your compressed filesystem is too large to make the iso file.  The genisoimage app in debian and ubuntu has a limit of 4GB per file on an iso.  What this means is that you will have to shrink down some of your user data files by omitting them or moving them off the system before you backup.

That looks like some sort of clonezilla backup.

Yes but you must make sure the kernel you use includes squashfs support and it will have to have the gui in order for the install to work.
