I have uploaded a new version just last night that should work better with 11.10 and 12.04 while still being compatible with 10.04.

For those having issues with lightdm and not logging in automatically, please do the following:

/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s xfce     <---replace xfce with your chosen default desktop from /usr/share/xsessions.  In my case, the xfce.desktop is what is in /usr/share/xsessions and I want it to be my default so I set this.

There are other small fixes to exclude more things and fixed up some wording, etc.

If nothing comes up from this, this will end up being the final Remastersys 3.0.0-1 that I release as stable.

Please test it and report back.

I just created a backup of my Linux Mint 12 and MATE desktop using 3.0.0-1 and it appears to have gone okay. On my first attempt to install from the backup I created something did go a bit screwy when it came to the user creation screen. Actually the problem was that no user creation screen actually even came up. I just kept getting a notification nag that I couldn't create a user because I was using illegal characters in the name. I'd close the nag and it would simply reappear. After a few times I could no longer close the nag and some notice concerning partitioning popped up behind it but I could ever get to that screen to read what was going on there.

Making a long story short, I did a cold reboot, went through the installation process again, everything went okay this time and I had a successful install.

I'll do some more testing and backup creations to see what behaviors I get.

For backup mode, the user creation screen is just a placeholder since you already have your users setup.

Right but when I get to the point where a user creation screen normally comes up what I get rather than the screen is an Invalid username message. I do nothing to prompt that message. It simply appears a bit after I select my keyboard layout. If I attempt to close that message box it just reappears. After a while a second box appears behind the Invalid user message. That is a notification that Ubi-partman crashed. The install is dead from that point.

If I reset my box, on a reboot I am then able to install my backup okay. In this instance there is no Invalid user message.  The user creation screen comes up and requires me to give it user info.

I've done 3 different backups and in all 3 cases I was faced with the same scenario as I've stated above. I can say that in the end I did end up with a complete, operable system that duplicated the original.

Maybe I am doing something wrong when I create the backup but I don't know what it is. I haven't used remastersys since Ubuntu 9.04 was on the scene and then I was working with distribution disks rather than backups. I didn't have this situation with that.

That is strange since every time you reboot it starts it up from new like the last time.  Something might not be booting up properly.

I also consider this. When I boot into installation routine the Linux Mint splash appears just before getting to the installation routine. After the fail and when I reboot back into the install routine I get an Nvidia splash and then the Linux Mint splash. I positively do not see the Nvidia splash on my first attempt but always do on the 2nd attempt. And, as I said previously, I always get a successful install on the 2nd attempt.

I know the behavior and how to deal with it so it's no big issue for me. I just wanted to successfully archive an install of a ubuntu variant that has a configured MATE desktop and I have done that.

I will download and install Mint 12 and see if I have problems. So far, things have gone well for me, but I haven't tried this version.
I will also attempt to create a copy of RevLinuxOS 2.0 Alpha-1, which I've already created a successful ISO with. Cool

EDIT:
I just went to the Mint site and found the following information concerning MATE in the known issues of the release notes:

Quote
MATE is at a really early stage of its development and isn't stable yet. It was included in this release to gather more feedback and help it get the maturity it deserves.
If the MATE panel doesn't appear after you log in, switch to another theme. MATE has compatibility issues with Murrine-based themes under Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
You cannot run MATE from the live session. Once the system is installed you can try to run it by selecting "MATE" as your session at the login screen.

What happens if you do not include MATE in your remaster?

I also just found this information:

Quote
The issue was a compatibility problem between the Ubuntu version of GTK and MATE which affected users depending on the theme they were using. Some themes were known to work well (Carbon, Mint-Z-Mate, Clearlooks), but most were problematic and made MATE both buggy and slow.

We removed an Ubuntu patch in GTK (010_make_bg_changes_queue_repaint.patch) and repackaged it in Romeo (the unstable branch of the Linux Mint repository).

With this new version of GTK, MATE seems stable and fast with all themes.
How to test the fix?

If you’re using MATE in Linux Mint 12 and you’re interested in testing these fixes before they become available to everyone else, please follow the steps below:

   1. Open the Update Manager
   2. Click on “Edit”->”Software Sources”
   3. Enable “Unstable packages (Romeo)”
   4. Click on “Close”
   5. Click on “Refresh”
   6. Sort the list of updates by version number
   7. Apply all updates which version is “2.24.6-0ubuntu5linuxmint1″

Once the updates are applied you will need to log out and log back in.
