Greetings, I've recently migrated to AVLinux from Ubuntu Studio and for the most part I'm very happy. This is my first time using LXDE (I've been using GNOME 2 for years, though KDE3 is probably my all time favorite desktop). I'd like to get Compiz running to see how much of a system performance hit I take but it won't run correctly. I made sure that the compiz package and all its dependencies were installed, but when I try to launch it graphically it doesn't work, and an empty console pops up.

When I try to invoke compiz at the command line I get the following:
Code:
~/.config/lxsession/LXDE$ compiz
compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension

Launching fallback window manager
~/.config/lxsession/LXDE$

Anyone know what I am missing?

Hi,

You require 3D Video drivers installed. See page 23 in the AV Linux user manual.

Thanks for the response. I have the ATI drivers installed. glxgears runs fine:

Code:
14140 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2827.998 FPS

(this is on a dual monitor system, with another youtube video playing separately).

Hi,

Hmmm, well I can tell you Compiz is OK, I have 2 systems with Intel and nVidia graphics working here, however I have no ATi hardware to test personally. It would seem to me that you probably have to somehow enable composite extensions in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf for the ATi card. Perhaps another ATi user may have some clues, otherwise perhaps google or the Ubuntu forums will have an answer.

OK, thanks for the clues. I'll poke around more tonight when I get some time.
