Hi friends,

does one know a possibility to add user definable action do pcmanfm ?

This great file manager is a very good everyday help in running the superb AVLinux, a fact that shows clearly the wise compilation of Glen when creating AVL.

In music production I find it extremely helpful writing small little shell-programs that lame, copy, rsync, clean (etc. etc.) files in my individual production process. So it would be very useful to have that little helpers similar to "Tools-Open current folder in terminal" (i.e.). Unfortunately I couldn't find documentation of pcmanfm. (It has a man page, and a --help switch, but they aren't very verbose).

Maybe you can point me to deeper wisdom.  Roll-Eyes

Unfortunately this isn't an option in PCmanFM.  There is a modified PCManFM that supports this (called pcmanfm-mod).  It is based on an older version of PCManFM, and does not have support for network file management (ftp and smb).  I have bnot tried it, but I know fragadelic was using it some.

ah, thanks a lot, Trulan

I saw that "mod" version, I just thought there'd be an easy-to-use config file

OK, no problem, was just an idea

Hi Prof !

As Trulan said there is the PCManFM-Mod option which opens some doors and closes others. An option I have used in development and have almost replaced PCManFM with a couple of times is Gnome's native Nautilus file manager. Nautilus is probably the original file manager to do what you want and extend it's functionality with scripts, as an added bonus you get some other nice features like media thumbnails. While it's true that Nautilus uses more RAM than PCManFM on my system using Nautilus and Openbox I was still under 200mb of RAM.

The easiest way to do this is to keep PCManFM on the system to manage the desktop because Nautilus doesn't do good job of running the Desktop and wallpaper on LXDE, also PCManFM is very small and light so it doesn't take up a lot of resources or space on your system and it is a superior file manager for doing administration type of stuff behind the scenes. I suggest installing all of the 'nautilus' and related packages using the Synaptic package manager and creating a launcher that runs Nautilus with it's '--no-desktop' option so it just runs as a file manager only. So the launch command should be:
Code:
nautilus --no-desktop

PCManFM is a great file manager but it's not perfect I agree, Nautilus is worth a look for sure. I've heard good things about 'Thunar' the file manager for XFCE as well and I believe it supports scripts as well and it could also be installed in AV Linux, I personally have no experience with using it or setting it up with LXDE.

thank a lot for taking the time to answer so detailed, Glen  Howdy

it's a very interesting story about the file manager things, I will dig there a little

for me it's the perfect occasion -that's another option- to overhaul my production process and to improve it using the existing tools. It's a thing of "expanding my horizon", so it's a great chance  Grin

Thanks for your answers
