Hi,

*NOTE* Kits have been updated to 1.0 version

Recently I had a bachelor weekend and took advantage of the time to do some drum sampling... yeah I know I live on the edge...

Although AV Linux comes with an older Hydrogen version of my Pearl drumkit adapted from a Soundfont I did a few years back I wanted to take another kick at the can and redo the Pearl kit this time with a better large diaphragm condenser mic and more varied velocity samples to make it multi-layered. The resulting Hydrogen kit I have dubbed 'The Black Pearl' not so much because I've enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies as the fact the kit is literally...black. Generally I am quite pleased with how it turned out and will be replacing the existing Hydrogen drumkit with this newer version in the next AV Linux release. I'm sure I will tweak and fine tune it some more but here it is for now:

I also decided to sample a bunch of hand percussion stuff we have laying around basically for a nice hand-percussion collection for recording with acoustic instruments. It consists of a cajon (A hollow drum box thingie that emulates a kick and snare drum) a set of bongos, maracas, tambourine, claves, woodblock, cowbell and some fingersnaps and handclaps. Most of these are multi-layered and all together it makes for a pretty organic collection of sounds that differ from most regular drumkits. Try it for yourself here:

Glen, you are completely MANIAC. Does you watch count 48 hours a day ?

i can't say how much I appreciate that kits, I will immediately include them into my recordings that weekend.

Thanks again, can't believe all that work you put into the PERFECT AVL. You are GREAT, man.

Well, all my fellow musicians, I think its a great opportunity to appreciate Glen's work, c'mon, join me, it's the "paypal button", not a big deal, Ok ? ;-)

Hi wolke and welcome!

If you really think these kits are good enough for that then sure, feel free to add them to the hydrogen site and the kit list. Thanks very much for taking the time to try them. Thanks for all the great work you guys do on Hydrogen it really is an awesome piece of software!

super,
two things left. first, i miss a simple open hihat instrument. there is only a open hihat combined with a closing hihat sound. is it possible for you to add an simple open hihat instrument:)?

the second, currently we have a drumkit contest running. i am not sure, if you are interested to participate the contest i will wait with publishing your drumkits till the contest is finished.

btw, i like both drumkits. good quality samples and nice layering with corresponding dynamics. a small constructive critic could be that imo it is better if all samples(layers) have the same amplitude level. for example 0db. first is that samples than use the full dynamic range of sample depth and also hydrogens linear working layering velocity algorithms give better results. else, both velocity differences (samples & h2 layer dependent velocity) will summed.

Hi,

OK, give me a week or so to record some open hihat samples and include them. I will post here when I have it completed that way you can check it out first. I did see the contest and I'll have to see if I can make time, I'm already quite busy. I will also let you know for sure whether or not you need to wait for that.

wolke,

OK I have made some changes:

1. I  sampled and added both semi-open and open HiHat samples to 'The Black Pearl' and added a '1.0' to it's name to differentiate it from the previous version.

2. I added some 'Waterglass' samples to the 'Gimme A Hand' kit and also added a '1.0' to it's name.

The links in the first post of this thread have been updated, and I will not be taking time to go in the Hydrogen drumkit contest so you don't have to wait for that. I also have left the sample normalizations as they were for now, I understand what you are saying but I don't have time to re-edit and normalize all the samples right now. Other than that please test the kits and let me know if there are any other issues.

Thanks!  Howdy
