Hello, I have been using remastersys to remaster my Mint 11 32bit before and it just work.. (3.0.0-1 and 3.0.1-1).. The thing is, it suddenly not working anymore (been trying like 5 times, none working).. I read some where (I'll edit this post if I find it again) that remastersys can get confused if there are more then one vmlinuz but I don't know what that's mean. I have 3 linux OS (i think all of them have vmlinuz on their own partition) on my netbook and 1 Windows, is that causing the problem?? My friend told me something about using unetbootin to try a new live ISO without make live-cd or live-USB and I think its contributing on my remastersys problem, I hope I got it wrong.. The new custom remastersys ISO can boot, it also showing the live boot option, but it cannot load the desktop. I've remove the quiet slash option on boot and the boot process halt on adding live session user.. Whats wrong with my remastersys?? My system : mint 11, 32bit, gnome 2.3, AMD E350, using fglrx driver, this is my remastersys log Distribution Mode Selected Enabling remastersys-firstboot Checking filesystem type of the Working Folder as it must be a valid linux filesystem for permissions /home/remastersys/remastersys is on an ext4 filesystem Making sure popularity contest is not installed Installing the Ubiquity GTK frontend Checking if the /home/remastersys/remastersys folder has been created Creating /home/remastersys/remastersys folder tree Creating /home/remastersys/remastersys/ISOTMP folder tree Copying /var and /etc to temp area and excluding extra files ... this will take a while so be patient Cleaning up files not needed for the live in /home/remastersys/remastersys/dummysys Cleaning up passwd, group, shadow and gshadow files for the live system Making sure adduser and autologin functions of casper are set properly Copying memtest86+ for the live system Copying your custom isolinux setup to the live system Checking the ARCH of the system and setting the README.diskdefines file Creating filesystem.manifest and filesystem.manifest-desktop Creating the casper.conf file. UNetbootin is not responsible, there is no reason for it to create problems. But still you can try other live cd creators like LILO etc. Any i too have Ultimate Edition 3.01 , Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and windows 7 , i don't think no of OS's will create a problem too.
Maybe your setup must have got disturbed. You could backup a list of installed applications with dpkg(get selections) and also the sources you added and then do a fresh install. And then restore the list.(Google use of dpkg(get selections))

It might be unetbootin but why not just use USB Startup Disk Creator from ubuntu?
That other issue I see is that you have both firefox and chromium in the new user skeleton folder /etc/skel. These can get quite large and if you are trying this out on a VM you might not have enough ram allocated since everything on the live including the live user and the defaults from /etc/skel must reside in RAM.

Yesterday I got RAM upgrade (now my Mint Katya use PAE kernel and have 4 Gb RAM) then i try boot the new custom iso on virtualbox with 1024Gb or RAM, the result still the same, it stop on "adding new live session user"
Burning the ISO using unetbootin, Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator, and pendrive USB from Windows, none of them work. all of them can boot of course, but all stop on "adding new live session user"
Is there any chance to get remastersys working again? I'll post the new log after trying the 3.0.2-1

Do you have autologin set on your system? If you do, you have to remove that and remaster again.

install 3.0.2-1 (all and gtk) and use them to remaster. And I set the login screen to not-autologin. edit: why i cannot see the new GUI? is that means i got wrong *.deb package??
The problem still exist, the ISO created successfully, but the boot process halt on "Adding new live session user.... ....."
I can't "code" my remastersys.log because the 4000 char limit so i attach it..
and one more thing, i'd like to say thanks for creating such great apps. It works on me before (I ever make a custom ISO sized 3.4Gb and it works). I hope that it will work again..
I think I will soon migrate to LMDE and i hope that remastersys also work on it (I'll keep reading the Remastersys Development)

It is probably failing due to the manual stuff you put in /etc/skel as it still has user specific information in it which will prevent the live user from being created.
Remove everything from /etc/skel and try to remaster again. If it works fine then you know the stuff you copied to /etc/skel is the problem.
Also, before you remove everything from /etc/skel, post the results of the following:
sudo du -sh /etc/skel

aragorn@aragorn-1215B:~$ sudo du -sh /etc/skel [sudo] password for aragorn: 30M /etc/skel
I dont remember "add" something to my /etc/skel.. ah, so i'll just remove it I'll post the result after I remaster again NB: do i have to really close all my windows on remaster?? I cannot do anything while remastering then... Is it safe to run FF while remaster??

You don't have to but mksquashfs will finish faster if nothing else is using CPU cycles. If you are copying user settings then you should have everything closed as some applications put a lock file in their config folder while running to know if they crashed.

Everything looks normal.
The part of casper that your system seems to be locking on is /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/casper-bottom/10adduser so maybbe post that and also post /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/casper so I can see if Mint has modified it somehow.

Im back to katya again, Debian wasn't that hard to use, it just MATE and Cinnamon that annoy me. So I do a fresh install, now with 64bit LinuxMint 11, add all the apps I need, install all the upgrade and add rematersys repo. The Custom ISO result still same as before, it stop at begin add live user.. So, any other suggestion?? here's the new log. NB: I still waiting for the po files. I really want to have remastersys talk in Indonesian.

Did you install the gui package? They are now separate. As for your user issue, there must be something with your system or with mint that is different from regular ubuntu. I have made numerous remasters of all the ubuntu versions from 10.04 to 12.04 with all the different desktops like kde, gnome, unity, xfce, lxde, afterstep, icewm, etc. and have never had a single issue like you keep having.

Are you trying to do the live in Indonesian? I'm wondering if this may be part of your issue. The live itself is english only.

Functionally there is no difference between the old version and the new except for the changes that have taken place within casper and ubiquity.
Remastersys evolves with every new version and I just keep adding to it so I doubt the old version will work. If it does, let me know and I'll take a look at the differences and see if I can determine what is different but I really doubt it will work as there are way more issues with newer ubuntu and the older remastersys version.

I think I might know what is going on. I believe it is related to code I added so that recovery mode works after install. I can add this on the remastersys-firstboot though and will remove the shadow/gshadow files from the live.
Thanks very much for sticking with this and helping me figure it out!
I will have a new base remastersys 3.0.2-1 package tonight with the fix as that is the only thing different from the old version to the new.
