I did A successful Dist backup for my ubuntu 10.10
but while installing my custom Ubuntu when it almost done installing i got this error
Unable to configure GRUB
Executing 'update-grub' failed.
this is a fetal error
when i press the OK button i get this
Bootloader install failed
sorry an error occurred and it was not possible to install the bootloader at the specified location
any help will be highly appreciated
attached 2 screenshots of the problem

2 possibilities:
1 - you are using an older version of grub that the installer doesn't support.
2 - you are using an old version of remastersys that doesn't support ubuntu 10.10 - post the remastersys.log so I can see.

Just looked at your screenshot - grub should either be installed on /dev/sda which is the first drive of the system or on the partition itself. Trying to put it on /dev/sdb will not be bootable in the manner you think.

Nothing is wrong with your remaster. The problem is you are trying to install grub to the wrong place. See my second post to you in this thread.

what do you mean?????
all i did is tried to install it on virtual machine just to see will it work.
before i want to go ahead and format my laptop and then try to install it then i'm gonna have a big problem.
i don't want to format my laptop unless i'm sure it's gonna work.
i still don't understand what the problem is so please break it down for me like i'm a five year old with a simple step by step solution.
i appreciate your efforts......................................... really i do

Your screenshot says you are trying to install grub to /dev/sdb. Only /dev/sda is bootable.
I wouldn't judge anything from a virtual machine especially if you are using virtual box as there are known issues with vbox on ubuntu.
Regardless of this fact, I have nothing to do with the installer. Any ubuntu remasters just use the regular ubuntu ubiquity installer so I don't really support anything on the installer.

i thought you were right maybe it's maybe because im trying to install it on a virtual machine using virtual box but guess what......
i put the custom ISO from REMASTERSYS to a flash drive and formatted my laptop and continued the installation and when it's almost done then .....BAM........... the same stupid error.
and i tried to install the bootloader on /dev/sda just like you said and nothing happened
this is frustrating
any help

Is this from a fresh 10.10 install or did you upgrade from older versions?
Since 10.04 only grub2 is supported in the ubiquity installer. If you upgrade from older versions without upgrading fully to grub2 then this is why you are having problems.

i added a lot of apps it went from being 700 megabyte to 1.5 gig
