The issue is a want to install AV Linux to a usb hd from my laptop, BUT I want to put grub boot on the internal laptop HD so
that if I unplug the UBS Hd with AVlinux , I can still boot into Vista on the Laptop HD? The laptop HD has Vista and an old ver
Ubuntu studio with a lot of work on it . The live dvd isn't real clear on this issue .

Thanks jk

I would think you could set the boot order in your BIOS.  Select to boot from USB before boot from HD.  Install grub+AVLinux to your USB HD.  When you boot with the USB drive connected it will boot from that.  If no USB drive is connected then the HD boot will be used.  So you do not need to touch your Windows installation on your HD.
