Hi May i suggest this incredible piece of software to be included into the next release: www.darktable.orgdarktable is an open source photography workflow application and RAW developer. A virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers. It manages your digital negatives in a database, lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable and enables you to develop raw images and enhance them. |

WOW! I am looking forward to the next release! My second donation is on it's way  Hopefully many others will use it as well. BTW: Do we really need OpenOffice ... I have never used it in AVL because AVL is my Audio/Video/Graphics OS ... Abiword and Gnumeric could do the job alike. Is it safe to remove it? |

Yeah it's safe to remove it. I'm an OpenOffice / LibreOffice user, specifically I use Impress fairly frequently, so it's partly my fault that it's included. Another issue is that both OpenOffice and Ardour2 depend on some Redland libraries (librdf, librasqal, and the like), and there are some version incompatibilities between AVLinux's Debian Squeeze base and the versions in Debian Testing. Basically, the situation makes it very easy to break Ardour when installing or upgrading OpenOffice, so including everything in versions that work together really made sense. I won't cry though if OpenOffice is removed from AVLinux 6, I'll just install it myself.

Hi, My 'secret' is to use the Libreoffice deb packages they provide directly from http://www.libreoffice.org/ Simply download unzip and 'dpkg -i *.deb' in the unzipped folders as root. This is the easiest way to get the most recent version and also avoids any dependency issues with other libraries. There are now also Libreoffice packages available in the Squeeze backports repo but they are a few versions old (doesn't really seem to make a difference since L.O. is very stable). I personally use LibreOffice to create the AV Linux User Manual since unfortunately AbiWord seems to be quite broken for creating PDF files larger than a few pages, however with some of the new and larger applications being added to AV Linux 6.0 is is quite likely the entire office suite will be removed to make room on the ISO. |

Sooner or later, there comes up a need for an office application even on a AV-focused system, e.g. calculating track times in a spread sheet or writing a lyrics sheet. I such a situation, many people are used to Office suites. I think it's a good idea to include it. Since the fork, Libre Office tries to be "more free" than oracle-owned OO.  Maybe another reason to switch to Libre besides the danger of trashing ardour if someone tries to update. |

Actually, I went totally off-topic!  1. I'd suggest to stay with GIMP 2.6.12 as GIMP 2.8 has some serious issues that prevent its use on slower machines. 2. To support it's graphical capabilities, dispcalgui + argyll should be definitely included for display calibration and color management. Everyone who seriously wants to edit photos and does not have at least a calibration profile for his/her display is  to me. |

Color/contrast adjustments without calibration may actually worsen a photograph. It can be done with Little CMS + tweaking propietary graphic card software, but dispcalgui + argyll are definitely a better way. Having them preinstalled along with DarkTable would make a lot of photographers, visual artists, and graphic people pay attention to AVLinux. Just got my hands on a Lumix GH2 cam and other than running Silkypix on Wine, DarkTable is the best solution - and way more user friendly ! |

Great news ! Really looking forward to AVLinux 6.0 (even if I have to install Libreoffice myself with deb packages). Pledged 25 $ coming your way as soon as its out ! When color / contrast adjusting photographs a dark & neutral theme makes a huge difference. I tested about a dozen and the attached four did the trick. Hope someone finds them useful. Hi,
Thanks for sharing those, you shouldn't have to wait too much longer...Actually LibreOffice is staying put I find it too useful myself and many musicians/graphic artists/film makers are also running independent businesses that benefit from the Office Suite, in addition it makes AV Linux much more well rounded as a Live-only system.

AVLinux 6.0 is everythng you promised and then some. Love Darktable and DispcalcGUI, and K3Bs ripping and advanced features. Just made my second $25 donation as promised  Your work is wonderful and it deserves a more efficient business model. Are you aware of Ardours or Celtx ways ? Gosh even the AVLinux 50 page manual alone could be charged for ! I bet the great personal assistance you and other members of the community provide in the forum can definitely be charged something for. And I am positive some plugins or extras could also be provided for a micro fee as are Celtx "packs". It would also help if you set a financial goal for every version and let us know how it is doing, along with some sort of donation ranking (Linux Mint style), etc... I dont think its AVLinux fault. I plan to use AvLinux until it runs out of "support". There is no standalone all-included LIGHT art distro that comes close to it as USB key. It is essential for my classes and community workshops, to the point that I dont even want to consider going back to Ubuntu Studio or KXStudio (You say it has improved, I bet it wont be as rock solid, Ill have to deal with dependency/codec hell & constant unecessary updates again, plus its KDE and more likely to lag on old PCs).
