USB2.0 and USB 3.0 port.
on same machine the usb works fine with Linux knoppix 6.2

any ideas to debug and get it working with avlinux?

Hi,

What kernel is your Knoppix 6.2 using?  Use 'uname -r' in a terminal to find out.  Also, it might be interesting to compare the outputs of 'lspci -v' between AVLinux and Knoppix, at least to compare the USB controller sections.

If, as I suspect, the working Knoppix is using a newer kernel than AVLinux, you could try installing a 'testing' kernel in AVLinux.  See the second post in this thread:
http://www.remastersys.com/forums/index.php?topic=1917.0

Keep in mind that USB 3.0 is still a new technology, especially for the Linux world, and if it works in Knoppix that's a really good sign.  However, AVLinux is very likely not quite as much on the cutting edge of hardware support as is Knoppix - but we can still at least try to get it working.

Sorry for the long time until answering.

Here some output from uname:

avlinux: Linux satellite 3.0.16-avl-7 #22 SMP PREEMPT
              Fri Jan 6 23:46:34 EST 2012 i686 GNU/Linux
knoppix6.2: ( only live cd , not installed ):
Linux Microknoppix 2.6.32.6 #8 SMP PREEMPT
             Thu Jan 28 10:51:16 CET 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
ubuntu studio: ( I installed this and it works quite good,
but I used avlinux before and would like to have it again)
Linux satellite 3.2.0-23-lowlatency-pae #31-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT
            Wed Apr 11 04:07:36 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

status:
avlinux does not see my camera nor my encrypted USB stick
knoppix: camera working, but not the encr. USB stick
ubuntu: both working

I add the output from lspci -v as seperate files.

I want to try to use the testing kernel.
I added
deb http://www.bandshed.net/kernels/apt testing main
and I get the files installed in
/usr/src/linux-headers-3.4.1-rt9-avl1

is there a howto for compiling a kernel for avlinux or
is e.g 'How to Compile a Kernel for Debian ( Squeeze)' at
http://technozorgs.blogspot.se/2011/07/how-to-compile-kernel-for-debian.html
the right way?
or something else?

thanks for all your help.
( maybe it will take some time until I have time to answer again. )

BR
Jürgen

OK, I see the problem.  The xHCI module is not included in the AVLinux kernel.  I'll get a new kernel building for you to test.  Look for it tomorrow.

Of course, you are welcome to build your own kernels.  It's really not as hard as you would think.

That kernel compiling guide is pretty good, though it's a bit over-complicated in my opinion.  In AVLinux, step 1 shouldn't be needed (the necessary packages are already there), step 2 and 3 you can replace with your favorite way of downloading and extracting stuff.  Step 4 is needed if you want to be able to use remastersys (it needs updated to aufs3 if you're using a 3.0 or newer kernel).  Step 5 is for cleaning your sources, and that's not needed as you've just downloaded fresh kernel source.  I would replace step 6 and 7 with 'make oldconfig' and 'make xconfig'.  Step 8 I replace with 'make deb-pkg' (on a multi-core system, use 'CONCURRENCY=5 make deb-pkg', replacing 5 with twice the number of your cpu's plus one).  This will put four .deb files in the same directory as your kernel source directory.  Do not install the firmware-image, that will conflict with the firmware already installed.  Install the other three packages created using your favorite method for installing .deb packages.

OK, I have uploaded two new kernels: 3.0.36-avl-9, and 3.4.4-rt13-avl2, both of which have xHCI enabled and should work better for you.  You can find them in the AVLinux kernel repository.  Let me know if they work or not.
