No it's not safe, as you've observed doing so will uninstall a whole bunch of packages.

The GIMP is one of the many applications that is stuck on an older version in AVLinux due to the version of libgtk-2.0 that is in Debian Squeeze.  Upgrading that will literally rip the guts out of AVLinux, to the point that it would be easier to install Debian testing from scratch.

If you need the latest version of the GIMP, you'd be better off either building it from source (and even that won't work if it can't be compiled against the version of libgtk-2.0 we have) or installing another distro (like Ubuntu or straight Debian Testing) on another partition or in Virtualbox.

Hi,

Trulan is 100% correct, I did attempt to package GIMP 2.8 and it indeed requires a newer gtk library, on the other hand there are mixed reviews on 2.8, some diehards actually prefer 2.6 for stability and far lighter resource usage, but of course the only way to know is by trying, but AV Linux/Debian Squeeze can't be a vehicle for GIMP 2.8.

Still on 2.3 here!  - used almost all the time (for plugin GUIs,  various other tasks) never had any need to upgrade Smile
(in fact there's a lot about the older version I actually prefer)

Amen to that!

If a program works... it works! GIMP 2.6 does about 1000 more things than I'll ever do with it already, any new features would be lost on me. It's funny I have some Windows plugins and a couple of programs I use with Wine in Linux which are from 2001 or so, funny I never ever think "I need to upgrade this" because those particular programs do exactly what I need and work perfectly. I think much of the Linux world suffers from 'OCUD' (obsessive compulsive upgrading disorder). I'm personally actually enjoying the fact that Squeeze has aged enough that I am forced to (or perhaps relieved from) chasing after the next shiny version of some apps, it's helping me appreciate what's on the Desktop in front of me.

OCUD.  Now I understand what disorder I have gone through!!! I made it through safely.  Now I am OCUD-free.

Oh I'm still pretty badly OCUD, but I take it out on my poor little Android phone now and let my computer alone for the most part.   Roll-Eyes

Gimp 2.8 is not going to work in AV Linux 6 due to a conflict with libgtk-2.0, sorry.  Use a fresh install of Debian Testing or a recent version of Ubuntu.
