Hi again,

I never managed to load VST Fx on a Linux machine. I would like to try now on AVLinux.

I followed all the instructions in Extra Goodies > VST Launcher.
(copied the dll's into /usr/local/lib/vst, changed permissions to write/read for all users, created launchers, canged info in them using proper names etc)
I can see the plugins in the Applications > Multimedia, but clicking them nothing really happens.

Is there another step to do?

Viktor

Viktor,

Are you running JACK first? I noticed you mentioned ASIO, that has nothing to do with VST, ASIO is only for if you want to run Windows ASIO dependent apps on Linux for example Reaper or VSTHost, VST plugins running with FST don't use ASIO. The first time you run a plugin it usually takes several seconds for FST to write the config file. If it still doesn't work run the command from your launcher in a terminal and copy and post the output here.

Yes, I run Jack of course.

Ok, here's the output for the Waves plugins.

pcuser@gigabyte:~$ /usr/local/lib/./fst.exe /usr/local/lib/vst/L1.dll
yo... lets see...
/usr/share/themes/AV2_Dark_Meliae_Blue/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:53: Clearlooks configuration option "sunkenmenu" is not supported and will be ignored.
err:module:import_dll Library Waves.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\usr\\local\\lib\\vst\\L1.dll") not found
"/usr/local/lib/vst"
can't load plugin /usr/local/lib/vst/L1.dll
pcuser@gigabyte:~$ /usr/local/lib/./fst.exe /usr/local/lib/vst/Waves.dll
yo... lets see...
/usr/share/themes/AV2_Dark_Meliae_Blue/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:53: Clearlooks configuration option "sunkenmenu" is not supported and will be ignored.

what I don't understand actually is:
These VST plugins usually do run within apps in Windows: Wavelab or Cubase, for example.
Now, if I run them here, would they open as normal apps? would they have jack ports?

OK,

They run as separate JACK Clients like the linuxDSP plugins so you patch then into Ardour as inserts or connect then to other JACK apps with JACK Patchbay or Qjackctl.

Your problem is you are trying to run Waves plugins, many commercial plugins that have serial numbers, dongles or registration keys do not work in Linux. It's a bummer I know. Even cracked or Warez versions won't work. Most free VSTs work no problem but many commercial ones are unfortunately another story. Try a popular Free VST like the Ambience Reverb or Fish Fillet Plugins and see if they will work. I have a prized Waves Renaissance Compressor that won't run in FST but it will run inside of Steinberg Wavelab using Wine ?!

Yes, you were right. I found one of those VST plugins that you mentioned and it works 'out of the box'.

It's an amazing job that you are doing, GMaq. Holding a hi-quality Audio-Video OS on your shoulders, replying to every single post. But even before that: building it, configuring, explaining...

I wish I could support you at least financially, but at the moment we are in not so bright economic situation with my wife. But, as all other things, we hope this will soon pass.

Till then, I express my most honest thankfulness for this amazing Distro and help.

Viktor,

Thanks for your encouraging words  Embarrased

In the upcoming AV Linux 3.0 VST plugins will automatically appear in their own submenu (so will the linuxDSP ones) provided the template VST launcher in "Extra Goodies" is used, This will hopefully clear up some congestion in the Audio Video menu.
