Hi everyone,
I've been using AVLinux on my desktop for quite some time now, and my experience has been very positive so far.
I recently bought a netbook (HP Mini) but couldn't install AVL on it, no matter if I used DVD or USB. The installation (or rather the preparation for the live session) gets immediately stuck after the first error message, something to do with tmpfs...
Do I have to assume that my hardware is not supported or is there anything I can try?

Hi,

Can you boot and install from USB? If you are installing from a DVD sometimes it can take several seconds to move beyond the initial message. Another possibility is a bad DVD burn of the ISO.

See this: http://www.bandshed.net/pdf/AV4LiveInstall.pdf

I tried both methods (in fact I tried 3.0 on a DVD and 4.0 on a USB stick). Nothing happens after the initial message. I did wait for several minutes but no other messages showed up.

Hi All,

I installed AV 4.0 on my Samsung Netbook with very good results from a DVD I burned off of the .iso file.  It worked quite well.  It sounds like it might be a bad DVD.  You probably know this but I will say it anyway, when you burn your .iso DVD it is really important to burn it at a slow speed and not rely on the default that your .iso burning software sets.  I always burn mine at the lowest speed available.

Good luck,

James

Unfortunately the devices I boot from are not the issue. I repeated the test with new installations on both USB and DVD but nothing has changed. On the contrary, everything runs smoothly on my desktop. By the way I managed to boot from other live distros just fine, so I really have no clue about why AV Linux won't boot!

Saint Jules,

I really don't know what to tell you, if you are certain it isn't the ISO or media it would seem the AV Linux Kernel may not agree with your netbook, are you certain the CPU on the netbook supports PAE? A guess would be the other distros you are trying do not use a PAE Kernel. Beyond that I don't know what to advise since the same ISO is booting and installing successfully on other hardware, it would seem this unfortunately is a rare case of unsupported hardware.

Thanks for your reply Gmaq. How do I check if the CPU supports PAE?

Hi Everyone,

I have a HP mini 1115nr.  It came with XP and the first thing I did was re-format my HD!!  I can tell you that the way to go is to use your Desktop config if it is what you like.  It will save you a bunch of steps for sure.  Remastersys is the greatest thing to keep your 'config that works for you' among several computers you may need to use.  But that part you already know I guess.

1.  Once you have your new ISO
2.  Use UNETBOOTIN and select the ISO
3.  Have a FAT32 ready USB thumb drive (you have to make sure it is already formatted to the dumb FAT32... and mounted)
4.  It will take a long time when it gets to copying your large image file so dont worry if it seems like it is taking awhile... FAT32 is SLOWWWWW!
5.  After a while, you will be done... .unmount or whatever...
6.  Start your HP and press F9 I think.
7.  Start your old/new AV_*x with the Desktop
8.  Once GUI'd, you can click the INSTALL DESKTOP icon and go to town.
9.  I can guarantee that I have done this with success for both AV_3 and AV_4.

** WIFI works also.  But you will have to rename your WLAN0 to ETH1 I think.  I know there is already a rockin' tutorial on this forum.

Good luck and I hope maybe something here helps.

thanks for you reply Brian, unfortunately I had no luck with your method. Actually it seems like it's a very slight alternative to the standard installation you can find on the AV website, the difference being you don't mention the creation of two partitions on the stick.
Anyway, it gets stuck as usual, I get the very same error messages.
I just wanted to ask you about something though; what do you mean by "the way to go is to use your Desktop config if it is what you like" and also by point 7, I'm not sure I understood the meaning of "desktop".
Thank you
